The world Tsunami Awareness Day

The Sultanate of Oman is participating in the World of Tsunami Awareness Day on 5th of November each year. It is noteworthy that this day was announced by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 2015, on the basis of a proposal submitted by Japan due to its severe experiences over the years.

In this regard, the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) is cooperating in implementing tsunami awareness program with the National Committee for Civil Defense, Ministry of Education, National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. In addition to organizing lectures for the student in the Sultanate in order to raise the community awareness, preparedness and response, through which the tsunami risks information will be reviewed. Moreover, during which, the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (NMHEWS) will be defined and the role of the PACA in dealing with the risks of tsunami and implemented project by it in this field and future plan.

On this occasion, Dr. Mohammed bin Nasser Al-Zaabi, Chief Executive Officer of PACA said: "The consequences of natural hazards in recent years have become more severe than in the past because of urban expansion, which called for the importance of awareness of the dangers of tsunami waves and how to deal with them, which contribute in reducing the risks and the intensity of its impact especially for those living in coastal areas. This concern was translated into the opening of the (NMHEWS) on 23 March with the latest technology and technical equipment and the addition of the tsunami warning mission in 2015 under the guidance of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

 

His Excellency emphasized on the importance of training and strengthen the capacity, qualification and periodic evaluation of staff to work professionally, improve the quality of the provided services, the quickness of broadcast warnings in coordination with the competent authorities and the various media.

 

He also referred to the regional exercise of self-evacuation from Tsunami Waves (Indian Ocean Waves 18). The exercise was implemented by the PACA for the first time in the Sultanate on the coast of Swadi in Barka on 4 September 2018 in cooperation with the competent authorities with the participation of 23 countries from the Indian Ocean. The exercise comes in confirmation of the readiness of the Sultanate and all concerned sectors in the management of extraordinary cases.

His Excellency praised the great role played by all stakeholders in raising awareness, preparedness and responding to such exceptional emergency situation.
