Commercial operation of the southern runway at Muscat International Airport Begins

In its ongoing efforts to enhance Oman's civil aviation sector and improve airport infrastructure, the Civil Aviation Authority announced today the launch of commercial operations for the southern runway at Muscat International Airport. This follows the Authority's issuance of the necessary operational license. The new runway is set to boost both international and domestic air traffic, offering more takeoff and landing routes in compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

Spanning 4 kilometers in length and 45 meters in width, the southern runway can accommodate all types of aircraft, including the Airbus A380. The runway is equipped with 24-hour LED lighting and advanced lighting control systems, reflecting the latest advancements in aviation technology. Additionally, it can minimize noise pollution in surrounding areas and enhances the efficiency of takeoff and landing operations.

Rehabilitation of the runway began in mid-May 2022, as part of a phased project. The first phase, completed in October 2023, involved resurfacing the runway with asphalt, adding nine northern taxiways and seven southern taxiways, and extending the runway from 3.3 kilometers to 4 kilometers. This phase also included constructing new service roads to connect various airport facilities. The second phase, completed in January 2024, involved recalibrating the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and meteorological equipment, essential for emergency landings, and installing ground navigation lighting on the ramp.

The final phase focused on thorough technical and operational testing of the new systems, conducted in coordination with airport operators and other service providers, ensuring all requirements for the runway's licensing were met.

Throughout the rehabilitation process, the Civil Aviation Authority ensured full compliance with ICAO regulations, underscoring its commitment to maintaining high standards in aviation safety and efficiency.
