The Civil Aviation Authority Participates in the National Campaign to Raise Awareness of the Risks of Climatic Conditions and Tsunamis in Dhofar Governorate

The Civil Aviation Authority, represented by the National Early Warning Center for Multiple Hazards, is participating in the National Campaign to Raise Awareness of the Risks of Climatic Conditions and Tsunamis in Dhofar Governorate. This campaign is implemented by the National Emergency Management Center, in partnership with the Civil Aviation Authority, represented by the National Early Warning Center for Multiple Hazards, the Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority, and the Ministry of Information, in cooperation with the Dhofar Governor’s Office, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Social Development, and the Youth Center. The campaign will run from 29 September to 7 October 2024.

The campaign aims to raise awareness among the community and stakeholders about individual and institutional preparedness to mitigate the effects of emergencies. It also seeks to promote safe behavior among various segments of society during incidents and emergencies, strengthen community partnerships in recovery from emergency impacts, and reduce the consequences of such events. The initiative will enhance the safety system and protection against multiple hazards, raise public awareness of the early warning system, and ultimately ensure the safety of individuals and property.

Additionally, the campaign will deliver several media messages, including highlighting the significant efforts made by various sectors during Oman’s exposure to climatic conditions, emphasizing the need to instill proper practices in school communities regarding handling such conditions, and raising awareness of safety guidelines during such events as a shared responsibility. The campaign will also address the irresponsible actions of some community members during weather-related events that hinder national efforts during crises. It will educate the public on how to deal with the risks of climatic conditions to reduce potential hazards, discourage the spread of unverified posts from unreliable sources to limit rumors, and promote awareness of official news sources to prevent the spread of misinformation and rumors.

It is worth noting that the campaign targets the local, educational, economic, and security communities. The implementation mechanisms of the campaign include field meetings and seminars that will coincide with the campaign’s period in some of the wilayats of Dhofar Governorate. Additionally, media awareness efforts will aim to broadcast events in audio and visual formats across various social media platforms during the campaign. A theoretical and practical tsunami awareness drill and an awareness exhibition will also be held.

It is also noteworthy that the first phase of the National Campaign to Raise Awareness of Climatic Conditions and Tsunamis was conducted in North Al Batinah Governorate from 12 to 15 May 2024. This is the second phase of the campaign, reaffirming the importance of spreading awareness among the community to ensure quick responses in handling such emergencies and reducing human and material losses. The campaign focuses on coastal governorates and will extend to cover all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.
